School Bullying Statistics

School Bullying Statistics to Remember

With two thirds of school shooters reporting being chronically bullied throughout their school years and a recent string of teen suicides relating to Bullying, Bullying must not be permitted to be perceived as a normal part of growing up.

Over two decades of studies have been done showing the negative effects of bullying. These negative effects include psychological damage to students that are victimized as well as consequences for society as a whole.

Bullies, Victims and ‘Bully-Victims’ – the Changing of Roles Over Time

  1. Did you know that in one study of middle school students, only 13% of bullies and victims remained in the same role of bully or victim over three years. 87% changed their roles.

Bullying in Elementary School Statistics

  1. Did you know that 33% of elementary school students report being frequently bullied at school?
  2. Bullying starts right from the first day of Kindergarten with 20% of kindergarten students reporting being frequently bullied.

Bullying in Middle School Statistics

  1. Bullying tends to peak in middle school which means it’s often the worst period for victims of bullying.
  2. 13% of students bully others, 20.7% report being frequently victimized and a further 13% report both bullying others and being bullied themselves.

Bullying in High School Statistics

  1. In one 10th grade study of bullying, 29.9% of students report frequently involvement of bullying with 13% of students admitting to bullying others, 10.6% reporting being frequently bullied / victimized and a further 6.3% reporting they both bully others and are bullied themselves.

Teachers Underestimate Levels of Bullying in Schools

  1. In one study of 14 Northeast schools in the United States, 57% of teachers predicted that only 10% of students were being victimized by bullying. The actual percentage of students admitting to being victimized was 29%. Only 9% of teachers correctly predicted this.

Bullying Happens at Home Too

  1. Bullying doesn’t stop once kids leave the schoolyard. 42% of students report often bullying their siblings, 24% report being hit or pushed by siblings and 11% often beat up their siblings.
  2. These numbers are higher for schoolyard bullies with 57% of schoolyard bullies reporting also bullying their siblings. For students that are both bullied and bully others (so called ‘bully-victims’), 77% of these students bully their siblings.

Most Bullies Don’t Feel Empathy for Their Victims

  1. Only 49% of bullies feel sorry for bullying others. 40.6% report feeling indifferent and 20.9% report feeling satisfied. Children between the ages of 11 and 14 (middle school and early high school years) are the most likely to feel indifferent and/or satisfied towards bullying others.
  2. In viewing video tapes of bullying, 80% of bullies describe the bullies videotaped as happy in comparison to 30% for other students. Shockingly, only 27% of bullies believed the victims in the film were unhappy.

Lasting Negative Effects for the Bullies

  1. In one study from Norway, 25% of bullies had a criminal record by the age of 30.
  2. Bullies are 5 times more likely to report alcohol usage and 7 times more likely to report drug usage than students that don’t bully.
